Laser Therapy for Pets in Edmond, OK
Pain Management & Faster Healing
Seeing our pets suffer is difficult for every pet owner. At Family Pet Hospital, we offer an alternative solution to pain management: Class IV laser therapy. Laser therapy has been shown to help reduce inflammation and pain as well as promote healing in many parts of the body. We use Class IV lasers, which are the highest-powered lasers. This means that we’ll need to use the laser for less time than a less powerful laser.
If your pet has a chronic condition like arthritis or has just had surgery, ask our Edmond veterinarians if laser therapy might be helpful for your pet. Call (405) 294-1088 to learn more.
How Does Laser Therapy Work?
Therapeutic lasers use light energy to stimulate areas of the body to promote faster healing. Unlike normal light, lasers use a single wavelength of concentrated light to penetrate body tissues. The laser causes changes at the cellular level, giving the cells a boost needed to heal the body.
One of the best aspects of laser therapy is that it’s completely pain-free, non-invasive, and drug-free. It’s a great option for your pet if they’re not able to tolerate other kinds of pain treatment.
What kinds of conditions can laser therapy treat?
- Dental procedures
- Degenerative bone disease
- Broken bones
- Lick granulomas
Laser treatment is not recommended for use on tumors, uteruses of pregnant animals, testicles, eyes, or over areas that are actively bleeding.
What Can I Expect During Laser Therapy?
Our Edmond laser veterinarians will have your pet lie down, either on an exam table on the floor. A handheld device is used to direct the laser to the parts of the body that need relief. You’re welcome to stay in the room with your pet and it often helps them keep calm. You’re allowed to pet them during the treatment. All living creatures in the room must wear googles to protect their eyes from the laser while it’s in use. The laser is administered for three to eight minutes, depending on the part of the body is being treated. There’s no required recovery time for laser treatment. Often, your pet will feel relief almost immediately after the treatment.
Can My Pet Receive Laser Therapy with Other Treatments?
Laser therapy is safe to use in conjunction with other treatments, including medications, acupuncture, and physical therapy. For pets where certain kinds of pain treatment, such as prescription medications, isn’t an option, laser therapy is a great option.
Are There Risks with Laser Therapy?
If treated incorrectly or without protection, pets and humans alike can suffer eye damage or burning. Our Edmond veterinarians are trained in the proper use of this technology – do not try this at home!
